LA ICONS - El Coyote
El Coyote has stamped a giant, taco-shaped imprint on my soul! My family has been coming here for as long as I can remember. I’ve celebrated countless birthdays within these walls—including my 16th and 21st. I’ve dined here as a child, then while pregnant with both of my kids, and now with those same kids—who are somehow teenagers!
This is true Southern California Mexican food. It’s different from Mexican food in Mexico… and from anywhere else, really. Coyote food is deeply woven into LA culture, and after nearly a century, they’ve perfected it.
El Coyote has been an LA institution for over 90 years. George and Blanche Salisbury opened the first location in 1931, then moved it to its current home on Beverly Blvd in 1952. Walking through the doors feels like stepping into another era. Maybe that’s because I’ve been going for so long, but it’s also the vintage decor, Hollywood lore, and the holiday lights that stay up year-round. The cherry-red leather booths, dimly lit interiors, and signature margaritas set the scene, while the waitresses—dressed in brightly embroidered skirts with hoop petticoats—bring the place to life. There’s always a celebratory energy here.
You might recognize El Coyote from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but for me, it’s the place in LA to get a crispy taco and enchilada combo—paired with the best margarita in town. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a celebrity… or even better, maybe you’ll see me. :)
