Artist Statement:
🛶 Fun fact: I got tasked with doing a photography project about the LA River in college. When we got the assignment, my classmates and I looked at each other and made faces. I mean...if you’re not from LA have you ever even heard of it? You might recognize it’s concrete glory in Terminator 2, or a dozen other movies (like Grease!). You might have driven over it and noticed how unremarkable it was. I know I have! I don’t remember what I turned in at UCLA, but I know that by forcing us to go and document and research the river, we all gained respect for what it stands for, and what locals are trying to restore and reinvigorate. .
🛶 Did you know it was (almost totally) paved in concrete by 1948? .
🛶 You CAN fish in the LA river, but no native species survived the channelization of the river in 1938. .
🛶 It has been decided that there is no way to restore the 51 mile stretch of riverway to its former glory....but...that isn’t necessarily ideal today. .
Why was it covered in concrete, you ask? Well, if left to it’s own devices, this river moves around all over the place and floods the city! As ugly as it is, the concrete stops this from happening. .
Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) was founded in 1986 by poet and activist Lewis P. Macadams, which began with a group of less than 20 people. As of 2019, the FoLAR cleanup was the largest river cleanup in the United States!! .
🛶 By the summer of 2019, kayaking in the LA River has become common
