“La Reina de Los Angeles” - Translation: “Queen of the Angels”
I was inspired by some really interesting history of Los Angeles, my home town.
🍊In the late 1800’s, the LA Chamber of Commerce launched an unprecedented “booster” campaign to get people from the Midwest and East Coast out west.
.
🍊It was crazy! They even altered Southern California’s past to a romanticized Spanish utopia. It was then advertised as a paradise of beautiful weather, cheap land, and plentiful jobs. (Which it kind of was...but they would say things like, “You can open your window and pick an orange for your breakfast.”)
.
🍊This campaign lasted for decades and it clearly worked! One of the iconic images printed on much of their literature showed vast orange groves in front of snow capped mountains.
.
🍊 I grew up in LA and have a love affair with the city and it’s history. This was my interpretation of the feelings and romanticized mythology of what is now Los Angeles. I love the fact that LA is where Hollywood resides, and that the people who started this town sold it as a story—just like a movie.
